The new year introduced the annual problem of making a cool-looking design to act as a kind of signature or glyph to occupy one of the lower corners in one of my stencils. After much some experimentation--wherein I discovered how crap the uppercase J looks in Times fonts and drifted worringly close to something that looked swastika inspired (anyone who can tell me what the lower left MMX reminds me of can have five points)--I arrived at something that looks remarkably similar to last years offering. This time I decided to draw it out more carefully and make it more geometric.

Oh yeah, as for the stencil itself, it's nothing fancy, just a simple Photoshop job combining Roy Orbison with everyones favourite entry to the Advanced Combat Rifle Programme: [...tumbleweed...] the G11. [...more tumbleweed...] Look it was in Fallout 2, okay?

This stencil was done on one of the smaller canvas boards I picked up from Lidl, it's a similar size to A3. Originally. It was going to be a three-layer stencil, but this would have been a fucking nightmare so I exercised some artistic judgement and worked it down to two. I don't generally like multiple layer things anyway. I was surprised with how neat and sharp this stencil turned out though I had to touch up the red background around the edges (I don't think the sub-zero temperatures were helping much here).

I'm going to see about getting a better photo of this.

Welcome in 2010 with another one of my crappy songs. This one is an esoteric cover. You've probably never heard of Simon Dupree And The Big Sound or their seminal [year] song [trivia failure... aborting] Kites. So here is my attempt at the song. I tried to be all loud/soft dynamics on this one because I'm just so fucking scene or something. I'm also turning into a dirty little studio whore, there are no less than three different distortion effects used on the guitars on this.

Oh look it's another stencil. For a start, this photo is shit, I taken it immediately after I'd done the stencil in the garage. With the ridiculously murky weather, it's not as if I can get a decent photo outside under the light of the glorious day star like with the other photos. No, instead, I've uploaded this photo as a stop-gap measure until I can take a decent photo when the sun is out.
Despite the fact it was snowing, it was reasonably light still after school so I got a slightly better photo taken in the ten minute window of opportunity before it became dark again.

This week, Lidl have had a selection of art supplies on their random specials aisle and so I bought a load of stretched canvases knowing they'd be significantly cheaper at Lidl than at a proper art shop. This helped alleviate the shortage of suitable materials to do stencils on which had put a dampener on new stencils lately.

The canvas was quite tricky to work with due to my lack of a proper easel (currently I'm using a step-ladder) and I ended up having to do it with the canvas laid out on the floor, which was far from ideal. As a result, the stencil came out a lot messier than usual which was kind of irritating. I'd be tempted to make another attempt at it, but my flimsy paper stencils really don't hold up well to repeated use and so regardless of my efforts, a second attempt could worse still.
